Marieka Ratsma: Biomimicry Shoe

Marieka Ratsma defines herself a fashion designer however I think she is short selling herself. If you peruse her resume, you will realize that her talents reach further and wider than this limiting label. This artist plays among various mediums, last month we collaborated with her on a graphic design project; animated GIF’s for Celine Fall 12 Lookbook here :
It is obvious that her interests live in the innovation of the future, and nest in Nature, the result being projects very future forward rooted in the beautiful intelligence of Mother Nature, the Ultimate creator, the Ultimate birther of life. In her project, Biomimicry Shoe, she collaborates with American architect  Kostika Spaho: the pair were inspired by a combination of nature and modern technology translating it into a wearable, smart product;  the front of the shoe is the shape of a bird’s cranium and the spike of the heel a tapered beak. Using progressive 3D technology, they  managed to produce a product which requires less support material, resulting in optimal efficiency, comfort, strength and elegance.
